Antonis MavropoulosDear friends, colleagues and ISWA members,

The digitization of waste management goes faster

All the recent news and market transactions indicate that the digitization of the waste management industry goes faster than it was initially considered. As an example in Bergen, Norway the ratio of the accumulated data (in 2016) divided by the number of inhabitants is 3Mb. This represents the size of a Kindle-novel of roughly 300 pages (Source) !

Smart waste collection drives the digitization of the sector. The commercialization of related technologies represents a fertile ground for existing waste haulers and new market entrants, particularly as city administrators face pressure to carry out waste collection as efficiently and effectively as possible.

According to a new report from Navigant Research, the global smart waste collection technology market is expected to grow from $57.6 million in 2016 to over $223.6 million in 2025, an increase of almost 400% in 10 years.

The Internet of Bins (Source) and the Internet of Garbage Trucks (Source) are gradually getting better, cheaper and more efficient, providing not only substantial cost benefits but also better control, monitoring and transparency.

We need to realize that this is just the starting point of the transformation of the waste management sector. What we are doing now is simply to incorporate advanced sensors, software and some artificial intelligence to the current business models. But sooner or later, we will realize that sensors, software and artificial intelligence will generate new business models as they have already done in several other sectors and redefining the industry.

Stay tuned, and as you consider the next steps please participate in ISWA’s survey on the future of waste management: survey

Please circulate the link to all your friends and colleagues and ask them to participate too. Our collective knowledge is the most valuable asset.
