ISWA 2015 MEETS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Education is one of the key factors in the development of a sustainable society and in creating awareness for our environment. The ISWA 2015 organizing committee strongly values the influencers of tomorrow and wants to involve the possible future generation of waste management experts in the current debate.

Therefore the committee decided to open up one of the keynote sessions. Some 300 students from several Flemish high schools will attend a very interesting keynote session 'The impact of waste on our cities, oceans, nature and space' on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Well known experts from different sectors will tell the audience all about the impact of waste on oceans, on nature and on space, and how important sustainable waste management is in urban development today.

SOCIAL COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL MOBILIZATION
KEY TO RAISING AWARENESS IN SWM

Breakout session on Communication , Wednesday Sept. 9, 9h30-12h00

Communication is about interaction. This in mind, the contributors of this breakout session will publish 3 blogs in the weeks prior to the congress. Goal is to develop a dialogue that can be used or referred to during the session on Communication. The second contribution is written by Mrs. Anthea Rossouw:

"You can design, create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality (Walt Disney).
At ISWA we will be presenting the results of a project looking at improving waste management in social housing in the UK. This blog shares our experience of working on a similar project in South Africa. Despite the projects being on different continents and working with distinctly different communities, what unites the projects is that they were both undertaken in historically disadvantaged communities where the waste services have been poor."

"We need to tackle waste from a more global perspective"

Zoë Lenkiewicz, our blogger of the month, argues that we need to tackle waste from a more global perspective. Zoë is an independent environmental communications specialist. She tweets @ZoeLenkiewicz and her website can be viewed here.

"When the first ever Earth Summit took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, governments were aware that our production and consumption habits could not continue unchecked. Ten years later I was introducing kerbside recycling collections for local government in the UK. It was the first time that many residents had heard about recycling, and unsurprisingly we had a fair amount of explaining and persuading to do."
