Antonis MavropoulosDear friends, colleagues and ISWA members,

The digitization of waste management goes faster

All the recent news and market transactions indicate that the digitization of the waste management industry goes faster than it was initially considered. As an example in Bergen, Norway the ratio of the accumulated data (in 2016) divided by the number of inhabitants is 3Mb. This represents the size of a Kindle-novel of roughly 300 pages (Source) !

Antonis Mavropoulos

I wrote this piece in Mexico City, in between the breaks of the C40 biennial Mayors Summit, where I was invited to open the session on “Cities in the Circular Economy: New Models for Managing Materials and Driving Green Growth”. C40 is probably the most powerful and emblematic initiative that drives climate change solutions in cities. It connects more than 80 of the world’s greatest cities, representing over 600 million people and 25% of the global economy.

We were promoting the World Congress of 2017 which will be held in neighbouring Baltimore and were received warmly by the World Bank, EPA, Waste Management Inc, UNEP and the GEF, the Clinton Climate Intitiative, the Chamber of Commerce, the Commerce Department and at the Capitol by Congressman Ellison, promoter of a Zero Waste Bill. On top of all this we found time to hold a seminar with around 60 people representing companies and public sector. Thanks again to David and Michelle for their warm welcome in beautiful DC.

David Newman reports from COP21 in Paris

Gary Crawford, ISWA Board member and lead on climate change, and I both attended COP21 in Paris. The COP conference is like a circus with people protesting for their " climate rights", government negotiators completely disconnected from the civil society outside, as well as charlatans and weirdos offering every solution including meditation to solve global warming. It's quite fun, but the serious work of negotiation is exhausting with officials getting an average of four hours sleep a night for two weeks. No wonder there has been no deal to date. My compliments to the French for organising the most delegate-friendly meeting, and for using all their powers of persuasion to reach a global deal. We shall see if they succeed.

News from the President

David_NewmanDear Friends, Colleagues and ISWA Members

As I write this piece for our year-end newsletter I feel overwhelmed by the events happening over the last month and to happen over the next weeks. We were all horrified by the dreadful killings in Paris and an atmosphere of fear, at times panic, has spread over Europe. Yet it is here, in Paris, where leaders of our Governments from every corner of the planet will meet to try to forge a climate agreement. Such an agreement would be difficult in the most serene and peaceful surroundings. I wonder how much more nervous will our diplomats and politicians be and how much more intractable and unwilling to compromise as a result of the events of Paris, the tension between Turkey and Russia, the disturbing and vicious debate between Republican candidates for the Presidency of the USA, the fight against Daesh in Iraq and Syria.
