End of waste criteria

The Waste Framework Directive (WFD 2008/98/EC) is built on the principles of the waste hierarchy. European waste policy aims to introduce new concepts of extending product life cycle – circular economy.

One of the steps in the hierarchy is the recycling process by which waste materials are processed into products, materials or substances for the original or other purpose. Therefore, the term „end-of-waste criteria" is introduced in the WFD.

The EU Council adopted regulations which established criteria for determining end-of-waste criteria for glass cullet and copper scrap, but the criteria for other types of wastes (after recycling) that can be used as products or raw materials in circular economy are not quite clearly defined.

The aim of this session is to address this problem and give some good examples of implementation of circular economy in practice.
