'SUNYA-PROJECT: TOWARDS ZERO WASTE IN SOUTH ASIA' AND THE OPPORTUNITIES IN ISWA 2015
After three years of intensive collaboration in the SUNYA-project (www.sunyaproject.org), the involved European and Asian partners held their final conference in New Delhi, from 8 – 11 March. The proposal accepted for funding by the EU in 2011 included the commitment of 7 Asian cities to develop strategies for waste reduction, separate collection and recycling. Even if cities as Dhaka North City Corporation in Bangladesh and Matale in Sri Lanka differ strongly in size, and from economic, cultural and geographical conditions, they also have a lot in common. Because of the rapid urbanization and economic growth in the area, they have to deal with a huge increase of urban solid waste. During the project they developed pilots on reducing littering, waste prevention at schools, local small scale composting sites and collaboration with the existing informal waste sector. During the final event, representatives from all partners were invited at the Belgian embassy in New Delhi. Ambassador Jan Luyckx invited the project partners warmly to the ISWA2015 conference in Antwerp to share further experiences and ideas with colleagues from all over the world. He stressed the importance of international cooperation on waste management and on the good results of the Flemish policy.
ON THE VERGE OF THE TRANSITION FROM WASTE MANAGEMENT TO CIRCULAR ECONOMY
The opinion leader of the month is Karl Vrancken, Chairman of the ISWA 2015 Scientific Committee. In his blog post he discusses the transition from waste management to circular economy.
The circular economy introduces new consumption and ownership models, leasing and sharing systems, and considers extending the lifetime of products and compounds. It is clear that this requires a shift in mindset, a transition of the entire system. The question is not whether we need such a transition. It is rather when it will happen and more importantly what will be the trigger. The opinion leader of the month is Karl Vrancken, Chairman of the ISWA 2015 Scientific Committee. In his blog post he discusses the transition from waste management to circular economy.
